Introducing the Reality Quadrant

Nov 3, 2025

We all know about the ๐Ÿช„ quadrant that's been used as a reference for evaluating software since the early 1980s. Relha has always found these to be more ๐Ÿ”ฎ than evidence based so we've rethought this tool in an attempt to provide a more helpful, reality based, reference.

๐Ÿ“ฃ Introducing the Reality Quadrant

Relha's Reality Quadrant is based on measurable real world usage data and evaluates individual applications as opposed to vendors overall, providing a much more granular and specific look for decision making.

๐Ÿ“‹ Metrics

Applications are graphed based on two key factors:

๐Ÿ”นPopularity: Number of companies using the product

๐Ÿ”นCompleteness of Solution: Number of companies that rely on the product as their only solution in the category

We believe these metrics are the most helpful when evaluting software as they are based strictly on real world usage data - no opinion, hidden intrepretation, pseudo science, or pay to play.

Using these metrics, applications are graphed on a chart that puts them into one of four quadrants.

๐Ÿ”ข The Quadrants

Niche Solutions: Applications on the low end of both popularity and completeness of solution. These are often products that are used by a smaller number of customers to suplement another product in the category and not relied on as the leading solution for most of its customers.

Distrupters: Applications that are popular but often used in tandem with other solutions in the category as opposed to a standalone solution. This can be for various reasons including more focus on marketing than feature set, vendor solution bundling with other products, or an upcoming product still expanding its feature set.

Market Definers: Applications that have both a high level of market peneration as well as completeness of solution. These are products that set the standard for the rest of the market. They are the end all be all application in the category for their customers.

Innovation Drivers: Applications that customers often rely on as their only solution in the given category but don't have high market penetration. These solutions could be serving a particular niche industry, highly capable but newer solution, or be under marketed.

๐Ÿ“ˆ Trending Status

While seeing the current ranking of an application is important, understanding where the application is trending based on prior data allows for a more complete picture when making decisions. For all Reality Quadrants, Relha allows you to toggle on the 12 month trend to be able to see where the application ranked a year ago compared to now.

โœ… Every App, Every Category

Relha provides Reality Quadrants for every application and category we track. Each category page shows only top apps, navigating to an application's specific page allows you to see it graphed on a quadrant even if its not a top app.

Unlike ๐Ÿช„ quadrants, Reality Quadrants are available free of charge and are updated monthly.

To find Reality Quadrants, search Relha by application or category and click the Quadrant tab on any application or category page. If you find we are missing anything, please request we add it!
