Position Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Software Development Engineer with deep expertise in IBM i application development, RPG modernization, and AI assisted software engineering. This role will lead the design, development, enhancement, and modernization of mission critical IBM i applications that support key business functions. The ideal candidate is an expert RPG developer who combines strong technical depth with modern engineering practices, API development, AI powered software delivery, and technical leadership. This individual will drive application modernization efforts, improve development productivity through AI tools and agents, mentor team members, and partner closely with business and technology stakeholders to deliver innovative, high quality solutions. This is a highly visible role requiring strong communication skills, technical leadership, and the ability to translate business needs into scalable technology solutions.

Key Responsibilities

Application Development & Modernization

Design, develop, maintain, and enhance enterprise applications using RPG IV, RPGLE, Free Format RPG, CLLE, SQL, and DB2 for i

Lead modernization of legacy IBM i applications through modular architecture, service programs, APIs, and modern development practices

Analyze, design, code, test, implement, and support business critical applications

Identify and reduce technical debt while improving application scalability, maintainability, and performance

Database & Integration Development

Design and optimize DB2 for i database solutions utilizing Embedded SQL and advanced SQL capabilities

Develop and support APIs, web services, and integrations between IBM i and enterprise platforms

Troubleshoot and resolve complex application and database performance issues

AI Powered Software Engineering

Leverage AI development tools such as GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude Code, and agentic AI solutions to accelerate development, testing, code analysis, documentation, and modernization efforts

Build and implement AI driven development practices that improve engineering productivity and software quality

Evaluate emerging AI technologies and identify opportunities to automate software delivery activities

Technical Leadership

Mentor and develop engineering team members through technical guidance, code reviews, and best practices

Establish coding standards, documentation practices, and quality expectations

Partner with business, product, infrastructure, operations, and vendor teams to deliver technology solutions aligned with business objectives

Communicate technical designs, risks, dependencies, and recommendations to technical and business stakeholders

Required Qualifications

5+ years of IBM i application development experience

Expert level proficiency in RPG IV, RPGLE, Free Format RPG, CLLE, DB2 for i, and Embedded SQL

Proven experience modernizing large IBM i applications and reducing technical debt

Experience designing and developing APIs, web services, and enterprise integrations

Strong understanding of application architecture, design patterns, and software engineering best practices

Experience mentoring developers and providing technical leadership.

Hands on experience utilizing AI powered development tools such as GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude Code, or similar platforms

Experience building, implementing, or leveraging AI agents to improve software development, testing, documentation, and engineering productivity

Strong problem solving, communication, and stakeholder management skills

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with Java, Python, .NET, or other modern programming languages

Experience integrating IBM i applications with cloud platforms and SaaS solutions

Experience with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and DevOps practices

Experience with event driven architecture and modern integration frameworks

Experience in healthcare, insurance, or other highly regulated industries

IBM i related certifications

Education:

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience (Highschool diploma plus 4 years relevant work experience)

Pay Range

The typical pay range for this role is:

$83,430.00 - $166,860.00

This pay range represents the base hourly rate or base annual full-time salary for all positions in the job grade within which this position falls. The actual base salary offer will depend on a variety of factors including experience, education, geography and other relevant factors. This position is eligible for a CVS Health bonus, commission or short-term incentive program in addition to the base pay range listed above.
