Reporting into the CIO of Commercial Technology, this role will lead the engineering strategy and execution for Treasury Management, Corporate Card, Merchant Card, and digital/web-based commercial products. You will play a critical leadership role in delivering modern, scalable, and client-centric solutions that power key Commercial Banking capabilities.

Relocation to Buffalo, NY is required as this is a hybrid role.

Primary Responsibilities

Lead Domain Technology Strategy & Execution

Define and execute the technology roadmap for Treasury Management and Card Platforms, ensuring alignment with enterprise architecture, Commercial Banking strategy, and client experience objectives.

Drive delivery across a portfolio of high-impact initiatives, including:

Treasury Management platforms (payments, receivables, liquidity, fraud, pricing, onboarding)

Corporate and Merchant Card systems (processing, rewards, servicing, integration)

Digital and web-based commercial banking capabilities

Enhancements to Commercial Portal, Cash Management and related client-facing platforms

Onboarding and Servicing tools

Engineering & Solution Leadership

Lead multiple engineering teams (size ~60), responsible for building, integrating, and supporting critical Commercial Banking platforms.

Develop scalable, secure, and high-performing technology solutions

Establish engineering best practices, including modern SDLC, DevOps, and automation

Ensure strong architectural alignment across platforms and lines of business

Provide hands-on technical direction and guidance to engineering leaders

Business & Cross-Line Collaboration

Act as a trusted advisor and technology partner to business stakeholders across:

Institutional Client Services

Commercial Banking

Retail and Small Business Banking

Provide consulting and strategic input to help shape product roadmaps, prioritize investments, and deliver innovative customer solutions.

Drive Innovation & Transformation

Champion modernization initiatives across Treasury Management and Card ecosystems:

Replace or upgrade legacy platforms with modern, cloud-enabled technologies

Improve straight-through processing and digital capabilities

Introduce emerging technologies to enhance client experience and operational efficiency

Lead continuous improvement efforts across products and platforms

Adopt AI delivery practices in line with bank policy and standards

Operational Excellence & Delivery

Ensure strong execution across all technology initiatives within your domain:

Oversee delivery timelines, budgets, and resource allocation

Maintain high standards of system performance, reliability, and scalability

Track and report on key performance metrics and outcomes

Partner with CIO and senior leadership on planning and prioritization

Vendor & Product Management

Manage strategic vendor relationships and product ecosystems supporting Treasury and Card capabilities:

Evaluate and implement third-party solutions

Optimize vendor performance and cost efficiency

Ensure alignment with long-term technology strategy

Risk, Compliance & Governance

Maintain strong governance and controls across all supported platforms:

Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and internal risk frameworks

Proactively identify and mitigate technology and operational risks

Partner with Risk, Audit, and Compliance teams to ensure adherence to standards

People Leadership & Culture

Lead and develop a team of engineering leaders and technologists:

Foster a culture of innovation, accountability, and collaboration

Build and retain high-performing, diverse teams

Provide mentorship and career development opportunities

Promote inclusive leadership aligned with M&T Bank’s values

Education and Experience Required

A combined minimum of 15 years’ higher education and/or work experience, including a minimum of 4 years’ engineering and/or architecture experience and 11 years' large technology management / program leadership experience including people management

Minimum of 5+ years’ managerial experience leading technical teams

Deep understanding of Treasury Management, Payments, Card Technology, or Digital Banking platforms

Experience delivering complex, multi-system technology initiatives

Strong knowledge of system development life cycle (SDLC), architecture, and integration patterns

Proven ability to influence across business and technology stakeholders

Demonstrated success leading multiple teams across different business domains

Experience delivering solutions using Agile methodologies

Education and Experience Preferred

Bachelor or Master degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field

Strong experience in financial services, particularly Commercial Banking or Payments

Experience supporting multiple lines of business (Commercial, Retail, Small Business)

Strong understanding of modern engineering practices (cloud, APIs, microservices, DevOps)

Ability to translate business strategy into technical execution

Experience performing solutions delivery using Scaled Agile Framework

Exceptional problem-solving, communication, and executive presentation skills

M&T Bank is committed to fair, competitive, and market-informed pay for our employees. The pay range for this position is $201,200.00 - $335,300.00 Annual (USD). The successful candidate’s particular combination of knowledge, skills, and experience will inform their specific compensation.
