Reporting to the CIO of Commercial Technology, this role will lead the engineering strategy and execution for Commercial and Business Banking Sales, Lending, and Credit Technology including a team size of ~ 90 (mix of FTE and contractors. This executive will play a critical leadership role in delivering modern, scalable, and client-centric technology solutions that enable revenue growth, strengthen credit and lending capabilities, and enhance banker, customer, and operational experiences across key Commercial and Business Banking platforms.

Relocation to Buffalo, NY is required, as this is a hybrid role.

Primary Responsibilities

Lead Domain Technology Strategy & Execution

Define and execute the technology roadmap for Commercial and Business Banking Sales, Lending, and Credit platforms, ensuring alignment with enterprise architecture, business strategy, risk requirements, and client experience objectives.

Drive delivery across a portfolio of high-impact initiatives, including:

Commercial and Business Banking sales enablement platforms

Lending origination, underwriting, and decisioning

Credit platforms and workflow solutions supporting policy, adjudication, and portfolio management

Banker-facing and client-facing digital capabilities supporting lending and relationship management

Workflow, onboarding, servicing, and operational efficiency tools

Data and integration capabilities that support growth, decision-making, and risk management within Commercial and Business Banking

Engineering & Solution Leadership

Lead multiple engineering teams responsible for building, integrating, modernizing, and supporting critical Commercial and Business Banking platforms.

Develop scalable, secure, resilient, and high-performing technology solutions

Establish engineering best practices across SDLC, DevOps, automation, and platform reliability

Ensure strong architectural alignment across platforms, systems, and lines of business

Provide strategic and hands-on technical direction to engineering leaders and teams

Drive simplification, standardization, and modernization across the application portfolio

Business & Cross-Line Collaboration

Act as a trusted advisor and strategic technology partner to business stakeholders across:

Commercial Banking

Business Banking

Sales, Lending and Credit organizations

Risk and Operations partners

Tech, Data & Cybersecurity

Provide strategic input to help shape product roadmaps, prioritize investments, improve operating efficiency, and deliver differentiated customer and banker experiences.

Drive Innovation & Modernization

Champion transformation initiatives across Sales, Lending, and Credit ecosystems by:

Replacing or upgrading legacy platforms with modern, cloud-enabled technologies

Improving workflow automation, straight-through processing, and digital capabilities

Introducing emerging technologies to enhance customer experience, colleague productivity, and operational efficiency

Driving continuous improvement across platforms, processes, and delivery models

Adopting AI-enabled delivery practices in line with bank policy, governance, and standards

Operational Excellence & Delivery

Ensure strong execution across all technology initiatives within the domain and across the enterprise migration portfolio.

Oversee delivery timelines, budgets, priorities, and resource allocation

Maintain high standards of system performance, reliability, scalability, and supportability

Track and report on key performance indicators, outcomes, and delivery health

Partner with the CIO and senior leadership on strategic planning, execution, and prioritization

Ensure effective incident management, resiliency planning, and service continuity

Vendor & Product Management

Manage strategic vendor relationships and product ecosystems supporting sales, lending, and credit capabilities.

Evaluate and implement third-party solutions where appropriate

Optimize vendor performance, value realization, and cost efficiency

Ensure vendor-supported products align with long-term business and technology strategy

Manage product lifecycle considerations, including upgrades, integrations, and decommissioning

Risk, Compliance & Governance

Maintain strong governance and controls across all supported platforms and transformation initiatives.

Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, internal risk frameworks, and technology standards

Proactively identify and mitigate operational, technology, and delivery risks

Partner with Risk, Audit, Compliance, and Information Security teams to ensure adherence to standards and readiness for review

Ensure controls are embedded into technology solutions, delivery practices, and platform operations

People Leadership & Culture

Lead and develop a team of engineering leaders and technologists while fostering strong collaboration across peer leadership teams.

Build and sustain a culture of innovation, accountability, collaboration, and inclusion

Lead, coach, and develop high-performing teams and leaders

Attract, retain, and grow diverse technology talent

Provide mentorship and career development opportunities across the organization

Influence beyond direct reporting lines to drive enterprise outcomes across a matrixed environment

Education and Experience Required

Combined minimum of 15 years of higher education and/or work experience, including:

Minimum 4 years of engineering and/or architecture experience

Minimum 11 years of large technology management and/or program leadership experience, including people leadership

Minimum 5+ years of managerial experience leading technical teams and senior technology leaderswant

Deep understanding of Commercial and/or Business Banking technology, particularly in sales, lending, credit, origination, underwriting, decisioning, servicing, and workflow platforms

Proven experience delivering complex, multi-system technology initiatives across multiple business and technology stakeholders

Strong knowledge of system development life cycle (SDLC), architecture, integration patterns, and enterprise delivery practices

Demonstrated success leading multiple teams across different business domains and influencing in a matrixed environment

Experience leading large-scale modernization or infrastructure transformation initiatives

Strong ability to influence executive stakeholders across business and technology functions

Experience delivering solutions using Agile methodologies

Education and Experience Preferred

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field

Strong experience in financial services, particularly Commercial Banking, Business Banking, Lending, or Credit

Experience supporting multiple lines of business and enterprise-wide technology initiatives

Strong understanding of modern engineering practices, including cloud, APIs, microservices, DevOps, and platform modernization

Experience leading or supporting data center migration, hosting transformation, or large-scale infrastructure modernization initiatives

Ability to translate business strategy into technology execution and measurable outcomes

Experience delivering solutions using the Scaled Agile Framework

Exceptional problem-solving, communication, and executive presentation skills

M&T Bank is committed to fair, competitive, and market-informed pay for our employees. The pay range for this position is $201,200.00 - $335,300.00 Annual (USD). The successful candidate’s particular combination of knowledge, skills, and experience will inform their specific compensation.
